Driveway cracks, any advice before I...

Postby AllThumbs » Fri Aug 01, 2008 1:27 pm

Mess things up. My plumbing problems have me worrying about my driveway. I have cracks and if I reseal it(myself or those companies) without fixing the driveway cracks, I will have problems. Any advice for I do. Like what products?

Believe it or not this is easy.

1. If you go the route of getting a contractor reseal your driveway, you can have them do it. Crack sealing seems to be also a part of their services.

2. Doing it yourself can be easy. Your home depots and Lowe's, or local Ace hardware places, seem to carry crack fill stuff. Ask for product recommendation, your temp, type of drive way, etc. Remember most of the work is preparation. Removing dirt(shop vac with attachments), clearing weeds(screwdriver, etc.) and timing it to weather. Take your time, and the cost of DIY driveway crack repair shouldn't be too much.

Good luck, and tell us how it went.

Forgot to point out, get quotes from you contractors if you go that route first.

Going to Lowe's now, have to get parts, gatorbites, from another thread.

I have some large cracks in my driveway. Is this crack fill stuff expensive? Since it has to fill the whole crack?

Got the gatorbites and some driveway crack fill. I couldn't figure how much, so I just grabbed up a handful of bottles and figure I'll find out tomorrow.

Don't try and fill large cracks with the crack fill. You can get backer rods, used for caulking large gaps. Push them down so far and then use the crack fill. I've heard of people using sand, but could never figure how to put the sand in the crack without getting some stuck to the sides. Figured stuck sand would interfere with crack filler bonding to the crack.

Good luck.

Yes, an update. I asked, route driveway cracks? And I got an overwhelming response from other DIY'ers. Better cleaned out the cracks are, less for something to go wrong. I found foam backer rods, they were easy, I got bags and bags of them and returned the ones I didn't use for the driveway crack project.

I routed and cleaned the cracks. Sized up a backer rod and inserted it. Filled with driveway crack filler, and let set. Some repaired driveway cracks seemed to eat up the driveway crack filler, so I went back and refilled it once set. I have a Frankenstein looking driveway now, but no open cracks. I plan on getting my driveway resealed, just debating on whether to do it myself, or get a contractor. The driveway crack fix didn't take much time, just trips to the store to get the material.

Thanks everyone!

Good stuff AT!

Might have found that routing those driveway cracks out, lead you to another of the 1001 uses for an old flathead screwdriver. ;)

This driveway backer rod, is the same as the regular backer rods sold at Lowe's for large gaps to caulk?
